Specifying “ABS” on a material drawing is roughly as precise as specifying “steel” on an engineering specification. Both cover a family of materials with performance ranges that span two to three times the difference in critical properties. A purchasing team at a consumer electronics manufacturer learned this the hard way when a supplier substituted a general purpose ABS resin injection molding grade for the flame retardant grade originally qualified for their product. The parts looked identical. The UL94 rating did not survive the change, and neither did the product’s safety certification for the European market.

General Purpose ABS

What it is: Balanced properties grade optimized for processability and cost efficiency. Standard tensile strength of 40 to 50 MPa, heat deflection temperature (HDT) of 85 to 100 degrees C at 1.82 MPa, and Notched Izod impact resistance of 200 to 300 J/m.

Applications: Consumer electronics housings, appliance panels, computer peripherals, toys, office equipment, storage containers, and any interior component without elevated temperature, flame, or specialized surface treatment requirements.

High-Impact ABS

What it is: Grades with elevated rubber content for improved toughness, particularly at low temperatures. Notched Izod impact of 400 to 600 J/m, compared to 200 to 300 J/m for general purpose grades. Tensile strength is slightly lower (35 to 45 MPa) as the trade-off for toughness.

Applications: Tool housings, sporting goods, luggage shells, automotive interior trim, and any application where drop impact or handling impact is the primary design load.

When to choose it: Your component must survive drop testing, repeated impact in service, or cold-climate handling conditions. If your design standard includes drop test requirements (1-meter drop is common for portable electronics), high-impact grade is the starting point.

High-Heat ABS (HDT 105 to 125 Degrees C)

What it is: Grades with heat deflection temperatures of 105 to 125 degrees C under 1.82 MPa load, compared to 85 to 100 degrees C for general purpose grades. Achieved through modified monomer ratios or addition of alpha-methylstyrene comonomer. Tensile strength is comparable to or higher than general purpose grades (45 to 55 MPa).

Applications: Automotive underhood components (air intake housings, fan shrouds, battery trays), electrical junction boxes exposed to elevated ambient temperatures, appliance components near heat sources, and any automotive interior component subject to sustained temperatures above 85 degrees C.

When to choose it: Your application sees sustained temperatures above 85 degrees C. The standard test scenario is a parked vehicle in summer conditions: interior temperatures can reach 90 to 105 degrees C in hot climates. Any automotive interior component should be evaluated against this scenario using the HDT of your selected grade with an appropriate safety margin.

In the context of purchasing the materials of an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic for an automotive component, a procurement team selected a default grade which was low-cost and available on a steady basis. Nonetheless, in the first six months after the introduction of the product, complaints from the Middle East market consumers came in. Arab countries are very hot, and consequently, the temperature in cars may climb much higher than 95 degrees Celsius inside while the cars are parked in the sun. In used parts, they started to distort. The problem with warranties was fixed by moving a top heat grade with a temperature of 110 degrees Celsius HDT. Flame Retardant ABS (UL94 V-0)

What it is: ABS grades formulated with flame retardant additives to achieve UL94 V-0 rating: burning stops within 10 seconds of two flame applications, and no flaming drips are produced. Standard ABS without flame retardant additive achieves UL94 HB at best, meaning it burns slowly in the horizontal position but is not self-extinguishing.

Applications: All electronics and electrical applications where UL94 compliance is specified. Connector housings, power tool enclosures, switch bodies, electrical panel components, charger housings, battery enclosures, and any consumer electronics sold in markets requiring documented flame retardancy.

Critical clarification on UL94 ratings:

UL94 thickness rating is dependent. A certified grade of V-0 at a thickness of 3.2 mm may not pass V-0 at 1.6 mm. Plating Grade ABS

This is one of the most used applications of Electroplated ABS especially in automobile inner finishing (chromed elements). The finishing grade of ABS is developed to provide a given surface’s configuration for efficient adhesion of chrome after deposition of nickel and chromium.

It should be noted that some acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic cannot be plated efficiently. Universal and high-impact grades cannot hold chrome well without being specially prepared through a plating-grade composition. Deviations from that standard in the design results in adhesion and coating failure.

Verify all grade specifications against current manufacturer datasheets before specifying. Grade availability varies; confirm stock status with your supplier at the time of inquiry.

In case your OEM order or quality specification mentions usage of a certain grade brand, that specification will prevail. Even when direct properties of the material seem to be the same, brand interchanges are not allowed without requalification. Electronics and Electrical Equipment

Plastics for electronics enclosures typically require flame retardance to UL94 V-0 first, followed by dimensional and aesthetic suitability. Consumer electronics manufacturers almost universally state that flame-retardant ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic), PA-764, or similar other grades are the minimum requirement for outer cases, as opposed to general-purpose grades only for ‘structural components’ encased under the visible part of the product case.

For electronics applications, confirm:

  • UL94 V-0 rating at the wall thickness specified in your product design
  • RoHS and REACH compliance for EU market electronics
  • Dimensional stability in the temperature range the product encounters in shipping and storage, not just in-use conditions (shipping containers in summer can exceed 60 degrees C)

Automotive Interior Components

Automotive interior ABS specifications are typically the most demanding, covering thermal performance, VOC emission levels, gloss, and scratch resistance. Most European and North American OEM material specifications require:

  • HDT greater than or equal to 100 degrees C for instrument panel components; greater than or equal to 105 degrees C for parts with direct sunlight exposure
  • Low-emission certification (VDA 278 or equivalent) for interior components
  • Specific gloss level ranges for Class A visible surfaces

Elevated temperature variants of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic (such as HH112, XR409H) or any other equivalent are primarily used in automobile interiors. It is advised to first check with the original equipment manufacturer whether or not the material is approved before any orders for production are placed. In a majority of automotive supply chains, material approval documents are part of the contract, not some unnecessary quality check step.

Consumer Goods and Appliances

The most versatile and highly polished qualities lead it high in the list. It is of top quality when visible parts’ surface is under consideration, products handled or carried need severe impact resistance, or prices need to make sense in the large sever of competitive supply.

As far as household equipment is concerned (coffee makers, kitchen appliances, or fridge moldings), make sure the grade designated for the application has an FDA certification. Basic ABS is not suitable for food contact in its naked form. ABS is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from ambient air during storage and handling. Undried ABS produces surface defects including splay, blistering, and silver streaks that cannot be corrected after molding. Drying before processing is mandatory, not optional.

Standard processing parameters for ABS injection molding:

  • Drying: 2 to 4 hours at 80 to 90 degrees C; moisture content below 0.1% before molding
  • Melt temperature: 220 to 260 degrees C; typical range 235 to 245 degrees C
  • Mold temperature: 50 to 80 degrees C (70 to 80 degrees C recommended for high-gloss surfaces)
  • Injection pressure: 80 to 120 MPa
  • Molding shrinkage: 0.4 to 0.7% (anisotropic; verify in gate-to-end direction for precision parts)

Processing windows for high-heat and fire-retardant grades are limited. Check the manufacturer’s processing manual for the processing parameters of the particular grade before configuring machine settings. Flame retardant acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic in isolation is very sensitive to the extent that processing temperatures above the maximum melt temperature can cause the breakdown of the flame retardant system.

ABS Limitations: What to Know Before Specifying

The goal of ABS is to provide a useful robust medium range of all physical properties. It cannot be advertise engineering thermoplastic that tops in performance in all aspects, and indeed it has some characteristic weaknesses that carry weight with some applications. In this case, the user is warned.

Resistance to UV rays: It is standard that ABS will disintegrate when exposed to UV radiation for long. After about 6 months use out of doors in the absence of UV stabilizer, the surface turns yellow. For such conditions, ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) should be used; not unwarranted of course. ASA is akin to ABS but structurally it has got stability to UV rays unlike ABS, behaves the same during processing and has good mechanical properties that can be used in outdoor conditions.

Solvent resistance: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic is not capable of supporting exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, esters, and ketones. If you are using any products containing these chemicals, for cleaning purposes or assembling a product using ABS, make sure there is no adverse chemical reaction before placing an order. This is of special concern when industries have to use products that are cleaned with solvent-based cleaners.

Continuous Service Temperature Limit: Ordinary ABS cannot be processed for service exceeding 80 degrees C. The higher heat ABS resins allow operation around the 100 degree C mark. For still higher ranges, take turns with either PC/ABS alloys, PA66 or PPS depending on the temperature range and the equipment design.

It is more helpful to be upfront with these restrictions at the outset than getting to know them after a failed produktion.

What is the difference between general purpose ABS and high-impact ABS?

ABS grade commonly used for products with no high impact stipulation, such as Chi Mei PA-757 and LG. Chem HI-121H offers a balance of stiffness, surface aesthetics, and processability. Standard grades of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic are not suitable for outdoor applications and prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. Exposure to UV light faster than it would with UV enhanced acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic results in yellowing and embrittling of the surface aplique within a few months. When considering an application outdoors, citing ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) instead of conventional ABS will be appreciated. This is simply because ASA possesses similar processing and mechanical properties, but better UV weathering resistance, suitable for outdoor application purposes.

Which acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic types have shown FDA compliance for food contact applications?

Conventional acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic does not permit its direct contact with food. Only specified grades from some manufacturers have food approval (FDA compliant grades). It’s prudent to verify compliance by a given grade you are dealing with by requesting a compliance certificate from your supplier, rather than the family of materials.
